Police in Hanoi have arrested a man for allegedly trying to rape a 19-year-old student who broke her spine jumping from a third-storey window as she fled her attacker, Dan Tri reported Friday.
Nguyen Viet Anh, 27, was nabbed after ten days at large, the newswire said.
He went into hiding on February 8 after taking Phung Thi Thuy N. to the hospital, it said, adding that the woman also broke her foot in the jump.
According to police, Anh met N., a college student, late last year and fell in love with her.
On February 8, he saw N. with another man on the street and allegedly planned to rape her for fear that she would hang out with the man, police reports said.
Later he met N. to talk with her before driving her to a hotel, according to investigators. However, the hotel refused to rent a room to Anh because N. would not stop crying.
The man then forced N. to go with him to another hotel where he rented a room on the fourth floor, Dan Tri quoted police as saying.
Anh asked N. to take off her clothes, which he then put into water, police said. N. then managed to escape the room and run into a vacant room on the third floor, from which she jumped to the first floor escape, according to the report.
Anh and hotel staff then brought N to a local hospital before he fled, it said.
Not much is known about Anh other than the fact that he studied in Russia for three years.
Further investigation continues.
