Ho Chi Minh City police are searching for a man who pulled a handgun on city police during a traffic stop.
On Monday, officers from an anti-crime unit in District 1 arrested Huynh Trung Hieu, 29, an accomplice of the man, on charges of "storing weapons."
Hieu was reportedly driving a motorbike with a passenger down Tran Hung Dao Street when a group of anti-crime policemen were on a patrol.
The officers pulled the two men over at the De Tham-Tran Hung Dao crossroad, and asked Hieu to produce his ID.
All of a sudden, the man seated behind him drew a pistol, wrapped in paper, and pointed it at the officers.
He later dropped the gun due to carelessness and a policeman quickly recovered the weapon and apprehended Hieu.
The man rushed into an alley on Tran Hung Dao Street, and jumped onto rooftops to successfully escape.
Hieu confessed to the police the gun was loaded with six bullets and cocked at the time of the incident.
At first he said they brought the gun with them to conduct a robbery, but later said they were bringing the gun home to hide it.
The police are still investigating the case.
