A court in the southern province of Dong Nai on Wednesday sentenced the leader of a five-member robbery gang to death as the gang killed three people including a police officer.
The indictment said the gang killed three people and injured four others between May and July of last year.
Bui Van Trung, 23, received the death penalty after being charged with murder and robbery.
One member, 25, received a life sentence and another, 23, was sentenced to 25 years in prison for the same charges.
Another member, 24, was sentenced to just five years for using stolen property and failing to report criminal activities.
Tran Quoc Tuan, the member who killed police officer Le Thanh Tam in Dong Nai in July last year, was shot dead by other police at the scene.
The incident, which ended the gang's short-lived operations with all its members arrested, was a shootout.
Local traffic police tried to stop three of the gang's members including Tuan and Trung for violating traffic rules but they fled and fired shots, injuring one cop.
They then proceeded to attempt to rob a motorbike from a man after theirs broke down.
The suspects fled when a team of police arrived. Tam was chasing Tuan when he was shot and killed. The other officers shot Tuan down as he continued to shoot at the police.
Previously, Tuan had killed a gun dealer in Dak Lak Province in the Central Highlands, stabbing the man 14 times in May last year when the latter refused to sell guns to the gang.
The gang robbed a motorbike, money and jewelries from a couple in the northern province of Thanh Hoa a month later.
In August, Tuan killed one member and injured another from another Dong Nai gang in order to steal a motorbike that they sold later for VND46 million (US$2,200).
