Police in the southern province of Dong Nai are investigating a case in which a group of six people attempted to attack two local officials on Sunday.

Initial police reports said that Tong Thanh Da, chairman of Long Binh Ward People's Committee, was riding in a car carrying Tran Thanh Nam, deputy chief of the ward Military Command, and two militiamen, when two young people on two motorbikes stopped them.

Four others then arrived with scimitars and iron rods, threatening to attack those inside the vehicle.

Police said Nam shot a gun into the air to scare them, but they did not stop the threats.

The group left after the official fired a second warning shot, according to police.

Earlier on July 5, Da proposed that related agencies take measures to protect him and his family because they had received many threatening text messages from different numbers.

He said the messages were sent to him after local agencies evicted people from eight illegally built houses on July 5.

The case is being investigated further.
