A steersman was critically injured Monday when a fire broke out on a boat carrying 17,000 liters of fuel on a Mekong Delta river.
Local police told Thanh Nien Tuesday that the fire completely destroyed the VND150 million (US$7,194) boat and part of a barge anchored nearby on the Bac Lieu Ca Mau River.
Truong Thanh Long, who owned the boat, said the accident happened when it was anchored, waiting for the high tide so it could return to Bac Lieu after getting the fuel in Ca Mau province.
While the cause of the fire was yet to be identified, local agencies said that the boat had failed to follow fire fighting and prevention regulations.
The 42-year-old steersman, Nguyen Van Tinh, is still under treatment.
The accident is being investigated further.
