A Ninh Thuan Province court has sentenced a French-Vietnamese man to 12 months in jail for using fake credit cards to withdraw money from ATMs.
Nicolas Nguyen, 31, was convicted of robbery by the Ninh Thuan People’s Court Thursday.
According to the indictment, Nguyen entered Vietnam on February 11 through Ho Chi Minh City’s Tan Son Nhat Airport and stayed with his relative in Ninh Thuan’s Phan Rang – Thap Cham Town.
Between February 25 and 27 he used 23 fake Visa cards to withdraw a total of VND47 million (US$2,155) from ATMs in the town.
He was arrested red-handed February 28 while withdrawing another VND6 million.
At the trial, Nguyen confessed to his crime.
The court said it handed down a lenient sentence because Nguyen confessed and his family had returned all the stolen money to the banks involved.
