A Cao Bang Province court Friday handed down jail sentences of up to 20 years to four people for swindling nearly US$150,000 from people by promising to get them jobs.

Nong Thi Van, 27, got the maximum of 20 years, and a broker, Trieu Van Viet, 18 years. Nong Van Dich and Duong Bich Quyen got four and five years respectively.

Vietnam News Agency described it as the biggest ever case of fraud in the province's history.

Between June and December 2010, the four took VND3.1 billion ($149,000) from 83 people, promising to get them government jobs by paying bribes.

Van told them she knew many officials in the Departments of Home Affairs and Education and Training.

Viet acted as her broker, getting VND2 million for each person who paid up.

He later brought Dich and Quyen into the ring.

The scam was busted and the four were arrested when people reported to the police after failing to get a job or their money back.
