Four people including three siblings were killed on Sunday, the first day of the Lunar New Year in two different traffic accidents.
On the National Highway 1A in Thua Thien-Hue Province, three people were killed after a bus driver lost control and collided with a motorbike carrying four young people.
Nguyen Thi Ngan, 16, Truong Thi Thanh, 10, and her brother Truong Quoc Bao, 7, were killed on the spot at around 8:30 a.m. in Loc An Commune, Phu Loc District, the VOV (Voice of Vietnam) News reported Monday.
Ngan was driving the motorbike and the other two victims were riding pillion between her and Hoang Thi Yen, 16. Yen has been admitted to the Hue Central Hospital in critical condition.
Le Quang Son, 38, from the southern province of Dong Nai, lost control and hit the motorbike when driving his bus from the opposite direction.
Police said the bus was not driving in the correct lane, Tuoi Tre reported.
Vietnam does not grant driving licenses to youth below 18 years of age. Traffic laws also prohibit more than two people traveling on a motorbike, except in emergency cases when one of the riders is sick, or if the third rider is an infant.
Also in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue on Saturday night, 38-year-old Tran Hoang died in the hospital after being hit by a drunk motorist named Truong Loi, 18.
Hoang was walking to buy some electric tools to light up his house about four hours before midnight on New Year’s Eve, Tuoi Tre said.
Police have said they are investigating the accidents further.
