A court in the southern province of Binh Phuoc Tuesday sentenced the former head of a district procuracy office to jail for 36 months for abuse of power and illegally possession of weapons.

According to the indictment, Nguyen Hung Vuong, former head of Bu Dang People's Procuracy, in January 2009 received VND45 million (US$2,356) from Nguyen Xuan Thanh in exchange for helping Nguyen Huu Loc from criminal punishment on charges of theft.

Thanh, who received VND50 million from Loc's parents and pocketed VND5 million as brokerage, was also sentenced to 36 months for "brokering bribes," the Binh Phuoc People's Court said.

After receiving the money, Vuong let Loc out on bail.

However, in March that year, Loc was sentenced to eight years in prison by the district's People's Court, prompting his parents Nguyen Van Hung and Le Thi Be - to lodge complaints exposing Vuong's actions.

The former official was also found keeping two shotguns produced in Russia and the US at his house without license.

Noting that Vuong's punishment had been decreased partly considering his contributions to the procuracy, the court proposed that related agencies consider the acts of Hung and Be who are suspected of offering bribes.
