Authorities in the central province of Quang Ngai have fined a Panamanian-flagged ship VND15 million (US$720) for spilling nearly 1,000 liters of oil in a local port on November 16.

Racer Express, which was not allowed to leave Dung Quat Port after the accident, was informed about the fine after local agencies finished the clean-up, Infonet, a news website of the Ministry of Information and Telecommunication, quoted the Quang Ngai port authority as saying.

The 43,000 DWT ship had berthed at the port to load wood chips for transport to China.

When its crew was pumping furnace oil as it prepared to leave port that day, a screw in the pumping-system valve came loose, causing the oil to spill.

Local agencies mobilized hundreds of personnel to clean up the spill that measured 300-350 square meters.
