The Hanoi police Saturday fined a foreign couple for possessing several swords and sabers they found after raiding their hotel room in Hoan Kiem District.

Lebec Nicolas Andre Jean of France and Polina Mykhalevyich of Ukraine were taken to the district police station where they agreed to hand over the weapons and pay the fine.

Possessing swords and sabers is illegal in Vietnam.

The two were taken in after the Hoan Kiem District police and immigration officials raided their room at Long Hung Hotel on Ly Thai To Street.

But the police did not say how they tracked down the duo who had entered Vietnam from China through Lang Son Province with tourist visas.

They said they bought the weapons in China as souvenirs.
