Police in Ho Chi Minh City detained 59 people Thursday night, busting an illegal football betting syndicate that had collected bets worth over VND130 million (US$6,878).
The ring, led by Truong Tri Dung, 42, was busted at the Thao Mi coffee shop and Dung's house in Tan Binh District after the Argentina South Korea match, police said.
Police also confiscated over VND61 million ($3,227), 46 mobile phones and 36 motorbikes during the raid.
Initial investigations showed that the ring, working from last June, accepted bets worth VND15-30 million ($793.65-1,587) a match for the European series, and VND50-130 million ($2,645) for a World Cup match.
Dung also hired Nguyen Xuan Phuong, Nguyen Xuan Hai and Nguyen Quang Tuan to work for him.
