Da Nang police have detained five men for their alleged involvement in a multimillion dollar football betting ring; eight other suspects remain at large.

Nguyen Van Thai, 41, was arrested May 29 while his accomplices Nguyen Ngoc Toan, Tran Chau Duc, both 28, Ho Thang Phuoc, 20, and Dinh Hoang Viet, 29, were apprehended last month with VND40 million in their possession.

Duc said the money was collected from losers and they were about to bring it to the ring leader Tran Dinh Hai, a 33-year-old local.

Police have issued a nationwide warrant for Hai's arest.
Eight other alleged members remain at large, although two face organized gambling charges.
Six others are simply wanted for gambling.
Investigators say the members managed gambling accounts to make online bets worth tens of millions of dollars.
They started operating last July, handling bets on both international and domestic matches.
Police have also seized a laptop and several documents containing football betting data.
Gambling of any kind is illegal in Vietnam, though the country has opened several luxury casinos to foreign passport holders.
