Five soldiers died after their canoe turned over at the foot of a hydropower dam in Vietnam's central highlands on Wednesday night.
The canoe was carrying six soldiers from Dak Lak Province's Buon Don District Military Agency and a local resident to fish out the bodies of two locals who'd drowned early the same day near the Serepok Hydropower dam No.4 on the Serepok River.
Phu Minh Ngoc Hung, the only soldier to survive together with the local man, said they met a strong swirl of water when they were some 20 meters from the bank.
The canoe then turned over and was broken very soon, according to Hung, who said he managed to hold on to a concrete piece jutting out from the dam and rescue the local man as the latter drifted past.
As of Friday, local rescuers had recovered the bodies of five soldiers. The bodies of the locals who drowned when they were fishing on a boat, were still missing.
