Vietnamese rescuers are searching for a barge with five men onboard which lost contact while cruising in rough sea off the Mekong Delta province of Bac Lieu.
The Dong Nai-based Thuong Hai Company said it lost communication to the crew of the barge ĐN0906 at around 11 a.m. on December 13.
The self-propelled barge was carrying 1,274 tons of concrete poles from Ho Chi Minh City to Bac Lieu.
The barge has no radio device and the crew members, who called their company via mobile phone before losing contact, said the vessel was stranded some 13 kilometers off the Dinh An estuary of the Tranh De River in strong wind.
The Vietnam Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Center (VMRCC) said it was notified about the incident at 8:27 a.m. on December 14.
VMRCC said it has sent two boats to coordinate with three others of the border guards and two fishing boats to search for the missing people.
The missing people include captain Nguyen Van Nam and crew members Nguyen Van Tuan, Nguyen Van Dong and two others with the same name Nguyen Van Lieu.
