Five people had a providential escape when a house collapsed in downtown Ho Chi Minh City on Friday.

Huynh Ngoc Hue, one of the survivors, told Thanh Nien that many cracks showed up in his house in the morning, so he took his mother-in-law, who is 89 years old, out of the house in Nguyen Thai Binh Ward, District 1.

Three other members of the family also rushed out just a couple of minutes before the 100-square-meter house collapsed, burying three motorbikes, two bicycles and many other things.

Initial information from the ward's construction inspectors is that a house nearby was digging a hole for the laying its foundation, which caused the incident.

The cause, however, is being investigated further.
