A mother and four children are believed to have drowned Thursday when a boat carrying ten members of the family overturned on the Da River in the northern mountainous province of Lai Chau.
The father and four other children were able to swim to safety. Boat driver Luu Hieu Dung, 15, has been detained by the police for investigation, the Vietnam News Agency reported.
Police said the motor boat had lost control after its propeller broke.
The 38-year-old mother and four children - one, 3, 7 and 10 years old - are missing. Local authorities have launched a search for the missing people.
