The Supreme Prosecutors' Office said on Monday that it has considered ratifying charges against five police officers in Phu Yen Province for allegedly causing the death of an arrestee last May.

The officers facing charges of "torture" include major Nguyen Minh Quyen, major Nguyen Tan Quang, senior lieutenant Pham Ngoc Man, lieutenant Do Nhu Huy and second lieutenant Nguyen Than Thao Thanh. All are officers with the Tuy Hoa Town Police Division.

The five policemen stand accused of causing the death of Ngo Thanh Kieu, 30, a resident of Tay Hoa District, who was a suspect in a robbery case.

According to investigators, on May 13, 2012, police summoned Kieu for questioning about a robbery that had happened two days earlier.

Later that same day, police found Kieu suffering from "symptoms of fatigue" and sent him to the provincial police's health clinic.

The man was later transferred to Phu Yen General Hospital, where he was confirmed dead upon arrival.

Autopsy results showed that he had bruises from his waist to the soles of his feet and three blood clots in his brain.
