The agriculture department in the southern province of Ba Ria Vung Tau Wednesday said 270 local fishing boats will be equipped with satellite communication devices to facilitate navigation when offshore.
The devices will also help fishermen receive information about weather conditions early, giving them more time to respond, while related agencies inland can track the ships' locations closely and provide them with round-the-clock support, according to the department.
However, it didn't give more details about when exactly the devices will be distributed to fishermen.
Equipping the boats with satellite communication devices is part of a project that was launched in May. It targets 3,000 fishing boats in 28 coastal provinces from now till 2013.
The project is funded with US$17 million in official development assistance from France.
