The Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam has fined a Vietnam Airlines passenger VND10 million (US$480) for opening an emergency exit of a plane shortly before takeoff, Nguoi Lao Dong newspaper reported Monday.

Vu Quoc Hung of Hanoi boarded the plane bound for Ho Chi Minh City at 9:30 p.m. on July 19 in Hanoi. Five minutes later, he opened the emergency exit on the left side of the plane.

Hung later explained to authorities that he became dizzy after boarding the plane and simply wanted to enjoy some fresh air.

He said he was flying for the first time and was unaware of standard flight regulations.

Hung requested that the CAAV to let him off with a warning due to his "ignorance," but his proposal was rejected.

According to the CAAV, unnecessarily opening an emergency exit is punishable by fines ranging from VND10 to 20 million.
