Firms fined for excessive pollution of air, water in central Vietnam

The Da Nang City administration on Tuesday imposed cash penalties totaling VND165 million (US$7,920) against three companies for excessive discharge of gas and sewage.

Two of the punished firms are seafood processors Ha Long Canned Food Company and Procimex Vietnam JSC. Each was fined VND40 million ($1,920).

Between February and April this year, the central city's Department of Natural Resources and Environment received numerous complaints from residents about the stench at the Tho Quang treatment plant which received sewage from many companies including those two.

Department officials said the Quoc Viet Environment Technology Company, which manages the plant, did not have the capability to deal with a sudden increase in production by the seafood processors.

Dana Italy Steel JSC, the third company was being fined for the second time for polluting the environment.

The previous instance was on July 2, 2010, when the company was fined VND55 million for excessive gas emissions with elevated amount of pollutants.

On July 9, Da Nang also fined Phong Bac Company, a handicraft exporter, for bringing into a city port 137 tons of plastic trash from Japan.
