The Ho Chi Minh City fire department called on the 1,000-odd businesses in the city's industrial zones to take fire safety precautions at a conference Thursday.

"It is important that business leaders' and workers' fire safety awareness is improved," Nguyen Tan Dinh, deputy head of the city industrial parks and export processing zones' management, said.

There have been some disasters at Linh Xuan Export Processing Zone in the city's Thu Duc District this year, causing damage worth hundreds of billions of dongs (VND1 billion = US$48,000).

Elsewhere, a massive blast at a cooking-gas plant in the northern province of Bac Ninh earlier this month injured 56 people, two seriously. The blast occurred when workers were filling gas that leaked.

The conference, which was organized by the parks and zones management and AAA Assurance Corporation, observed a minute's silence to honor firefighters who died in the line of duty.
