Up to 100 hectares of forest in Da Nang City were consumed in a fire caused by a local farmer who attempted to use controlled burn to clear his farming land on Saturday.
According to local authorities, Luong Van Dung, who lives in Hoa Phu Ward of Hoa Vang District, had set fire to clear the ground for his planned acacia forest. However, the flames, fanned by strong wind, got out of control and spread to the protection forest on Chua Mountain at 9 a.m.
Nearly 1,000 people, including firefighters, forest rangers and local residents, were mobilized to stop the fire. Their efforts were hindered by the mountainous terrain, hot weather and strong winds.
The flames were extinguished at 9.30 p.m., after a half-day battle, but many firefighters still have to stay at the scene for fear that embers may spark new flames.
Forest fires were also reported in two other locations in Da Nang City on Saturday. Both were put out after a few hours.
