Five stranded Filipino fishermen were saved off the south central coast of Binh Dinh Province by Vietnamese boatmen Thursday.
The fishermen were discovered Monday and said they had been afloat for 13 days after an accident. They said they had survived only on raw fish and sea water.
Local sailor Pham Ngoc Duong said the five men and a decayed corpse were about to sink near the Truong Sa (Spratly) islands when he spotted them around 540 kilometers off Binh Dinh.
Duong’s crew provided first aid to the sailors and helped them recover before transferring all to another local sailor Huynh Ngoc Tan who took them to an island where provincial border guards received them.
Binh Dinh authorities are completing procedures to send the sailors and the corpse back home.
