A Dak Lak court sentenced a father-and-son to nine years each for beating their neighbor to death following a bloody fight that began over a pair of slippers.
Tran Van Hanh, 57, and his son Tran Van Son, 29, were convicted of murder under provocation, a crime punishable by up to three years in jail.
According to the indictment, Hanh’s family had a party on March 27, Dak Lak Online reported.
When they spotted their neighbor, Doan Van Hong, walking down the road, they invited him to come in and join them.
After the party, a drunken Hong put on some slippers he found near the door and began to walk home. When Hanh’s daughter-in-law, Hai Anh, caught up to him and asked him to change his slippers, he reportedly insulted her.
Soon afterward, he returned to the family's house with a knife and stabbed Hanh’s son, 24-year-old Tran Van Hai, before returning to his own home.
After taking Hai to a local hospital for treatment, Hanh and his son Tran Van Son went to Hong’s house where a quarrel broke out.
The court found that, Hanh and Son had slammed Hong’s head on the ground and kicked him in the chest before wandering off.
Hong’s relatives brought him to the hospital after discovering him passed out on the ground.
Doctors concluded that Hong died before being admitted to the hospital due to hemorrhaging in his brain, heart and lungs.
