Police have arrested a 58-year-old man for allegedly clubbing his son to death in a tussle to save his grandson in Thanh Hoa Province, northern Vietnam.
Nguyen Duc Tan of the north-central province’s Vinh Loc District is detained for investigation into his alleged murder of his son, 23-year-old Nguyen Duc Hai, police said.
According to investigators, the father and son went to a wedding on November 28. When Tan asked Hai to leave the party at around 10:30 PM, Hai refused.
Tan went home on his own. Hai came home some half an hour later and insulted his father for making him lose face at the wedding.
He picked a piece of wood and tried to hit Tan.
When his mother Trinh Thi Tan tried to stop him, he punched her in the face and she fell on the floor.
He also took a knife to chase after some neighbors who tried to help Tan.
Suddenly, he grabbed his 4-year-old nephew Nguyen Duc Long, who is his brother's son, and threatened to stab him and other family members.
Grandfather Tan was on his knees begging Hai to let go of the child, but he kept slapping Luong's face, strangled him and cut his face with the knife, witnesses said
The old man then managed to free the toddler from Hai, who was rushed to hospital.
During the ensuing fight with his son, Tan grabbed a piece of wood and hit Hai in his head, killing him on the spot.
Tan turned himself in to the police after the incident.
Hai was released several months ago after serving a nine-month jail term in Ho Chi Minh City for thievery when he was a student at the Ho Chi Minh City University of Social Sciences and Humanities.
