Families seek release of 9 Vietnamese fishermen detained in Brunei

The families of nine fishermen from the central Vietnamese province of Binh Dinh who are being detained in Brunei Monday asked local authorities to secure their release and bring them home.

According to the families, fishing boat BD - 96082 with the nine men on board was seized by Brunei authorities January 21 while catching ocean tuna in the East Sea.

They are awaiting a trial scheduled for February 4, according to the family of Le Van Han, 42, the boat's captain.

The reason for their arrest is not known.

The families have written to the Binh Dinh people's committee and other relevant authorities seeking their intervention.
