The Nghe An People's Court on Saturday sentenced a former lieutenant colonel to five years in jail for helping inmates buy drugs from smugglers.

Nguyen Van Mien, policeman at the Ministry of Public Security's Prison No. 3 in the province's Tan Ky District, was found guilty on charges of "drug smuggling."

According to the indictment, Mien helped four inmates buy drugs from Hoang Nghia Dong, Nguyen Thi Nguyet Ha and Hoang Nghia Hai, all from Nam Dan District.  Mien and the innmates made two purchases between March and May 2010, buying a total of more than 14 grams heroin.

The inmates confessed that they asked Mien to either transfer money to their bank accounts or pay directly to the drug smugglers.

The court handed down various punishments to the sellers.  Dong was sentenced to 19 years, Ha to four years imprisonment and Hai to three years on probation.

Among the four inmates, Nguyen Quang Cuong was sentenced to 11 years in jail, Truong Dinh Thon to 10 years, Ngo Hong Duong to seven years and Vo Minh Phuoc to six years.
