A fire broke out after a loud explosion at an arms factory owned by the police in Hanoi outskirts on Friday afternoon, but no casualties have been reported.
Witnesses said they heard the explosion from the E112 factory, which is located in the An Ninh industrial zone in Hoai Duc Dist., about 500 meters from residential areas, at around 4.30. The ensuing fire sent black smoke billowing.
The factory is known to produce mechanical and optic equipment and weapons for the police. About 20 people worked at the department where the explosions took place, authorities said.
A VnExpress report quoted witnesses as saying multiple explosions "like gunfires" were heard during the fire, which threw debris dozens of meters into the sky.
Firefighters of Hanoi and Hanoi Military Zone put out the fire at around 6 p.m., then more than ten fire trucks left the scene to give way for ambulances.
Doan Huu Thang, deputy head of Hanoi Firefighting Police Department, said he did not have information about casualties.
The 9-hectare industrial zone, also owned by the Ministry of Public Security, is the first of its kind to supply police equipment and weapons, according to a report on VnExpress news website.
