A court in the Mekong Delta City of Can Tho on Tuesday handed down a 15-month jail term to a former justice official for assaulting traffic cops in July, Tuoi Tre reported.
According to the indictment issued by Cai Rang District's People's Court, on July 26, two Can Tho police traffic officers stopped Huynh Thanh Thang, then deputy head of Judicial Affairs Office in Chau Thanh District, Hau Giang Province, for speeding.
However, Thang, 49, refused to sign the record of his violation and have his blood alcohol content tested, prosecutors said.
The newspaper quoted the indictment as saying that Thang also fought with the cops, verbally abused them and grabbed the name tag and gun of a cop.
Thang was convicted of "acting against people on public mission."
