E-passport initiative to cost $52.5 mil

A project to make and grant electronic passports by 2014 will cost a total of VND1.024 trillion (US$52.55 million), according to a proposal recently approved by the Prime Minister.

 

Scheduled to be launched this January, the project includes granting e-passports at Vietnamese representative agencies overseas and checking e-passports at border gates.

 

The project will apply fingerprint identification technologies, guaranteeing that they are compatible with those used in e-ID cards as well as criminal archive systems currently being built by the Ministry of Public Security.

 

In other news, the PM has also approved the establishment of an agency which will advise the government on overseeing administration procedures and managing national archives of administration procedures, among other tasks.
