The bodies of eight secondary school girls in Hanoi were recovered Wednesday evening, soon after they drowned in a local lake.
The victims were seventh and eighth graders at the An My Secondary School in My Duc District.
Le Xuan Van, deputy head of the district police force, said the school girls were playing around the Tuy Lai lake when one of them slipped into the water.
Others tried to help but none of them could swim.
School principal Nguyen Dang Khang said the children had their classes off in the afternoon.
Eleven of them were at the site and the three survivors had called for help, he said.
The lake, used for seafood breeding, is hundreds of hectares large and very deep. Locals recalled multiple fatal accidents at the site, including adult victims.
Police are investigating the latest accident.
