Police in Vietnam's Mekong Delta province of Bac Lieu have arrested a Malaysian man and a Vietnamese woman for allegedly trying to take nine local women to Malaysia to work as prostitutes.

The police said that following a tip-off from locals, they caught Hiau Yoon Kong, 34, and Vo Thanh Nga, 28, as they were completing procedures at Ho Chi Minh City's Tan Son Nhat International Airport together with the women last Sunday.

Vietnam News Agency quoted the police as saying that the women had asked Nga to take them to Malaysia in the guise of tourists.

Nga told the police that she had sent three to four women to Malaysia on six different occasions.

She was paid 1,500 ringgit (US$495.7) by each woman who managed to reach Malaysia successfully.

The police are investigating the case further.
