An accident involving a car and a dump truck took place Monday on a national highway in Ho Chi Minh City when the car's driver swerved to evade a drunken man sleeping in the road, Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper reported.

At around 5:40 a.m. Luu Van Dung, 24, was driving a seven-seat sedan on National Highway 1 in Binh Tan District.

He saw a young man lying down in the automobile lane and steered the car to avoid hitting the man.

A dump truck driven by Truong Van Nhe, 28, rear ended Dung's car.

The truck toppled on to its side and plunged into the street barrier.

The sedan was badly damaged, but no casualties were reported.

The accident held up traffic on the highway. Police showed up and detained the drunken man for questioning.

It was not until 8:30 a.m. that the car and the truck were towed away.

Nearby residents said the man had been asleep on the highway since 2 a.m.

He faces charges of "causing public disorder and endangering traffic."
