A commune police chief in the Mekong Delta province of Hau Giang has recovered from a self-inflicted gunshot wound he sustained while under the influence of alcohol, online newspaper VnExpress reported Tuesday.
Last Sunday, Tran Van Ngot, the Chief of Police in Chau Thanh District's Dong Phuoc A Commune, returned home drunk and picked a fight with his wife.
Ngot allegedly brandished his weapon at his wife and other people in the household.
Witnesses say he turned the gun on himself and fired a single shot into his stomach. The bullet ruptured his duodenum (the first segment of the small intestine) and Ngot was rushed to the hospital for emergency surgery.
Senior Lieutenant-Colonel Tran Van Minh, police chief of Chau Thanh District, said they are planning to charge Ngot with misuse of an official weapon.
