The Dong Nai Province police admitted Monday that some officers had fought with a man after a minor traffic accident while under the influence of alcohol.

A 16-seater car belonging to the Thong Nhat District police veered sharply in front of a parked motorbike, and the motorbike reacted angrily, accusing the car driver of almost running over his foot.

He was abused and assaulted by the officers and the car driver, Tran Long, 33. They were all drunk since they were returning from a party after playing a football match.

The department claimed the motorcyclist Nguyen Ngoc Hung, 40, had thrown an object at the car, breaking its rear window, causing the people in the car to chase him into his cake shop, damaging furniture there.

But a video clip provided by local residents to Thanh Nien earlier showed Hung running into the shop after being hit, and the officers and driver chasing after him.

They broke three fridges and a cupboard inside.

Hung ran out the back door and was still chased. He had to run to a ward police station for help.

Some people in the car had tried to cover its number plate during the fracas, local residents, who had prevented it, said.

With the local police intervening, the officers paid Hung compensation of VND20 million (US$960).
