Hanoi police announced on Wednesday (October 19) they had arrested five members of a criminal gang that smuggled drugs from the northern provinces of Son La and Thai Nguyen to Hanoi.
The police arrested Trinh Van Bach, 37, Luong Duc Chinh, 45, Lieu Thi Cuc, 46, Tran Luu Thuy, 39, and Nguyen Thi Huong, 32, and seized 1,750 grams of heroin and 472 tablets of methamphetamine.
On August 20, the police caught Bach red-handed carrying more than 332 grams of heroin on a southbound bus at the My Dinh Bus Station in Hanoi.
Bach confessed to the police he bought the heroin from Chinh for VND185 million (US$8,800) two days earlier.
Based on his testimony, the police arrested Thuy, who herself is a drug addict and the leader of the drug smuggling ring, and other gang members.
Last year, Thuy established the gang to smuggle drugs from Son La and Thai Nguyen to Hanoi. The gang has successfully smuggled around 100 "bricks" of heroin (weighing 35,000 grams), with each brick fetching VND140-160 million.
Thuy said she made a profit of VND20 million for each brick of heroin.
Police are still investigating the case.
Under Vietnamese laws, possession, transport, or trade of more than 600 grams of heroin or cocaine can be punishable with death.
