A court in Hanoi Thursday handed down a death sentence to a man convicted of trading more than 6.6 kilograms of heroin, local news website VnExpress reported that day.

According to the indictment, in October, 2008, Duong Ngo Tho, 25, bought the drugs from a trans-provincial ring for over US$130,000.

On October 19 that year two members of the ring, Song A Dua and Ta Xuan Tien, were arrested on their way back after making the delivery to Tho in the northern province of Bac Giang, according to a report on Dat Viet news website Friday.

The money that Tho paid them was confiscated as well.

Further investigations later led police to arrest ringleader Song A Chong and Duong A Thang, who bought the heroin with Tho. Tho, however, managed to escape, Dat Viet reported

A trial by Hanoi People's Court January 28 last year gave Chong and Thang death penalties, while Dua and Tien received life sentences.

Tho wasn't arrested until December 19 last year.
