A man suspected to be high on drugs terrified a Mekong Delta neighborhood Thursday by climbing on a power cable naked and swinging an axe that kept injuring him.
Hoang Van Thao, 33, a homeless drug addict, ran around on the streets in Ward 4 of My Tho Town in Tien Giang Province at around 6 a.m. with an axe.
Cursing and screaming he slashed at the walls and windows of the house of Nguyen Thi Lan Huong, 38, according to eyewitnesses.
Huong said she was too scared open the door.
Thao then jumped into a pond nearby before climbing out.
The uncontrolled swing of his axe kept hitting him on his head.
Then he climbed up a wall, took off his clothes, and swung on an electric cable.
The police had to tell the local power company to cut power to the area.
They spent nearly half an hour persuading Thao to climb down a ladder they put up against an electric pole.
He was then rushed to hospital.
The police said Thao is a drug addict who had escaped from a Tien Giang reeducation camp on January 3 this year.
Thao used to own a house in My Tho, but sold it to finance his drug use.
He was sent to a compulsory rehabilitation center in the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong in 2004.
Later he was arrested in 2007 for robbery and sentenced to four years in jail.
He was caught using drugs again in 2011 and sent to the Tien Giang camp.
