A drug addict held a bookstore attendant hostage for nearly an hour at a supermarket in Ho Chi Minh City Tuesday, asking for a taxi to take him home.
Witnesses said that a little after noon, Voong Hoang Minh, 27, went into the Phuong Nam bookstore at the Maximark supermarket located in Tan Binh District.
He then grabbed a pair of scissors on a shelf and threatened to stab store attendant Ngau Ngoc Lan, 29, with it. He demanded that other attendants of the bookstore call him a taxi to take him home to Dong Nai Province.
Local police were mobilized to the site and were able to rescue Lan about an hour later as Minh was forcing her into the taxi.
Minh, who was later found to be a drug addict, is currently kept in custody for further investigation, police said.
A source told Thanh Nien that earlier that day Minh had met with an officer at the Tan Binh District police station, complaining about his debts and also saying a group of gangsters were threatening to kill him.
The official, whose identity wasn't revealed, advised Minh to return home, thinking he was behaving abnormally.
The man then wandered on several streets before entering the bookstore, the source said.
