A van is reduced to charred metal frames after it suddenly catches fire on the road in HCMC Monday.
A 16-seat van suddenly caught fire while it was travelling in a crowded street in Ho Chi Minh City this morning, but the driver and passengers managed to escape unharmed.
The driver, Pham Minh Quang, 40, said all 12 passengers, most of whom were elderlies, were going home in Tay Ninh Province, about 100 km from HCMC, after undergoing medical treatments in the city.
The Mercedes van was travelling in Truong Chinh St., Dist. 12 when Quang saw smoke coming from the car engine, he said.
Quang stopped his car and helped the passengers get out. He even had to carry some elder passengers who were too weak and old to get out by themselves.
After that, Quang attempted to put out the flame by using his fire extinguisher, but in vain. The van was soon consumed by the fierce blaze which also caused a traffic congestion in the street.
By the time the local fire-engines reached the scene 20 minutes later, the van was reduced to charred metal frames.
