Driver dead, officer injured after truck crashes into police car in central Vietnam

The trailer truck and the police petrol car were reduced to charred metal frames after the crash

A truck driver was fatally burned and a traffic police officer was seriously injured after the truck crashed into a police patrol car in the central province of Thua Thien-Hue early Saturday morning.
The accident happened 45 minutes after midnight on National Highway 1A’s section through Huong Tra Township.
According to initial investigations, before causing the crash, the driver of the trailer truck, who has not been identified, stopped at a filling station on the highway for fuel charging.
After the pump station’s attendant filled around 100 liters of diesel, the driver refused to pay money and ran away.
The speeding truck then crashed into the traffic police patrol car, which was parked on the roadside, and both vehicles plunged into a field, caught fire and exploded.
Senior Lieutenant Nguyen Tin, who was standing next to the car at the time of the accident, was seriously injured. He is being treated in hospital for brain injuries.
By the time rescuers arrived at the scene, the two vehicles were badly burned. The truck driver, who got stuck in the cabin, was burnt to death.
The case is being investigated further.
