Dong Nai authorities pledge strict punishment for river polluter

Authorities in the southern province of Dong Nai said Friday they will strictly punish the Sonadezi Service Joint Stock Company for dumping untreated sewage into the Dong Nai River.

The waste treatment plant of the Sonadezi Service JSC, a subsidiary of the state-owned Sonadezi Corporation, was caught early this month discharging millions of cubic meters of untreated sewage into the river.

Dinh Quoc Thai, chairman of Dong Nai Province People's Committee, said the punishment will be decided after investigators' submit their final reports.

As many as 78 households in Tam An Commune have lodged complaints against the Sonadezi Service JSC for damaging their seafood farms and orchards by polluting the river water.

The farmers are demanding compensation from the company for their losses.

By the time it was caught, the Sonadezi waste treatment plant in Long Thanh Industrial Zone had signed contracts to treat sewage with 42 companies, with 80 percent of the sewage coming from dyeing and textile production.

The Sonadezi Corporation, the parent company, is the main investor in industrial zones in Dong Nai Province.
