A 21-month-old boy was transferred to a Ho Chi Minh City hospital Monday after doctors at a Khanh Hoa Province hospital accidentally perforated his urinary bladder while doing an inguinal hernia surgery Thursday.

The blunder by doctors at the Cam Ranh General Hospital was only discovered later when the boy, only identified by his initials T.A.D., could not urinate and his stomach swelled up.

He was rushed to the provincial hospital for another surgery to save his life.

He is now at the Children's Hospital No.2, one of HCMC's two leading pediatric hospitals, where operations will be performed on his bladder.

The Cam Ranh hospital has promised to cover the cost of the boy's treatment, and paid his family VND30 million (US$1,440).
