Police in Cao Bang Province have launched a criminal investigation into a suspended district Party chief for a fatal road crash he caused last January.
While the family of the three dead victims in the accident has requested authorities not to press criminal charges against Lanh Duc Dung, police said they have not decided.
Nguyen Hoanh Anh, chairman of the northern province, said Dung has been trying to deal with the aftermath of the crash.

The accident happened in the afternoon of January 30 when Dung’s car hit a motorbike and instantly killed all three riders, including a 1-year-old boy, a 62-year-old woman and a man of 36.
His car flipped off the edge of the road and ended being stuck headstand, leaning against the front of a shack.
Dung had minor injuries.
Cao Bang authorities asked him to step down from his post a couple days later.
