A 7-year-old was killed in Can Tho on Sunday after slipping into a hole filled with water at a construction site.
Nguyen Van Quoc Duy, a Mekong Delta first-grader, and five of his friends went to the area, designed to be the location of Phong Dien District Commercial Center, to play after class.
Duy slipped into a deep hole and drowned. He died before his friends managed to get help.
The hole had been dug to store water for construction financed by the local 279 Construction and Commerce Investment Joint Stock Company.
There are five to six similar holes around the site. None of them are fenced off and none have warning signs.
Students and young people usually visit the site.
The company has given the family VND5 million (US$263).
Nguyen Van Vui, site manager, was quoted by local news website Vnexpress as saying that he didn't anticipate any danger associated with the holes.
"After the incident, we will fence the water holes," Vui said.
Can Tho police are investigating the case further.
