A 25-year-old man from the northern province of Hoa Binh will stand trial for blackmailing a dairy company by threatening to poison its milk, the People's Supreme Procuracy said Wednesday.
According to the indictment, Luong Van Thai in January bought two packs of Vinamilk yoghurt and ejected herbicide into them with a syringe.
He then sent the yoghurt to Vinamilk Company, the country's largest dairy company, with a threatening mail, prosecutors said.
On January 8, Thai sent an email to Vinamilk, asking it to transfer VND100 million (US$5,414) to his bank account, and the company agreed to give him VND55 million.
Ten days later the young man was arrested when he was withdrawing money from an ATM in Hanoi's Cau Giay District.
Thai, a fresh graduate from Hanoi University of Education, told police he had previously withdrawn a total of VND35 million of the extorted money that he spent on retrieving his laptop out of a pawn shop and buying other things.
