A court in the central city of Da Nang Tuesday ordered a local company to pay VND 14 million to a student for using a photograph he had shot without his permission to promote its project.
The Hai Chau District Court said Toan Cau Xanh IT Solutions Company was guilty of copyright violation after it used a photo it had taken from news website Vnexpress for its homepage to promote an IT project.
Mac Bao Khanh, 23, had earlier this year sued Toan Cau Xanh after discovering his photo on the company's website last July under a different name.
After two rounds of failed talks between the two sides about compensation, the court pronounced that the company has to pay 70 percent of the photo’s value, assessed by experts at VND 20 million (nearly $1,000).
The company also has to pay the experts VND 2.5 million for their services, the court said.
