A Czech man was arrested in Hanoi Friday for allegedly swindling more than US$50,000 from several people by promising to get them Czech visas.

Tien Phong newspaper quoted the Hanoi police as saying that Petr Taborsky, 44, has visited Vietnam many times since 2008, and in November 2011 met Nguyen Cong Hai, 48, through friends, and hired him as an interpreter.

He claimed to be a businessman and told Hai that he could get a Czech visa for $6,500.

Hai collected $57,500 from 12 people and paid Taborsky between November 2011 and February 2012.

After waiting for several months in vain for the visas, he asked the Czech man to return the money. Taborsky returned only around $2,500.

Hai reported to the police after failing to get back the remaining amount.
