Customs finds car, printers being smuggled into Vietnam

A Ho Chi Minh City company smuggled a Mercedes Benz and 221 printers hidden in a batch of scrap plastic into Vietnam, according to the city's customs office.

Initial information was that late last month the HCMC branch of the Hanoi-based Ha Thanh Ltd., Co., declared to customs officials that it imported 15.6 tons of scrap plastic, saying that it had been treated in accordance with environmental requirements.

The company declared the batch to be worth about US$2,300.

However, the company failed to present related receipts, despite demands from customs it do so.

Customs officials later found an entire Mercedes Benz automobile and 221 HP, Samsung and Epson printers hidden inside the cargo container.

All the smuggled products had been used previously, according to customs officers.

The batch has been taken into custody for further investigation.
